Investigation into activities of Chief Editor for Strana.ua Ihor Huzhva are based on legal evidence of bribe extortion made by him. This is not pressure on the press.

This was announced by Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yurii Lutsenko, Censor.NET reports citing 112.

"I may state that freedom of speech was not hurt during searches at Huzhva's [office] - it was not there. Instead, there was $10,000, extorted for not running a defamation article," Lutsenko told a briefing on Friday.

The prosecutor general reminded that State Fiscal Service opened criminal investigation against Huzhva in 2016 for tax evasion in amount of 94 million hryvnia.

Lutsenko said the experts assessed this case Inflicted losses of 17.7 million hryvnia ($680,770).

He also added that in this new case against Huzhva, law enforcers first received a statement by an MP of extortion of $20,000 for not running a defamation article by Huzhva's media, and on June 22, Huzhva's assistant received $10,000.

Chief Editor of Strana.ua online news outlet Ihor Huzhva was detained on June 22.

"Based on materials by State Fiscal Service and prosecutor's office of Kyiv, Ihor Huzhva, who demanded and received $10,000 for not publishing some damaging information about an acting politician, has been detained. The investigation possesses video and audio evidence," prosecutor general wrote back then.

Ihor Huzhva has been notoriously known for pro-Russian stance of media he heads, and has been widely known as an owner of Vesti holding, which has been conducting pro-Russian propaganda and covering activities of Russian terrorists and mercenaries.
