US Ambassador to UN Samantha Power demands Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko's release. VIDEO

Savchenko became one of the 20 unjustly detained female prisoners from around the world included in Power's project Free The 20.

The U.S. Ambassador to UN announced this on Sept. 23, dedicating the day to the criminal case against Nadiya Savchenko. Power posted Savchenko's photo on her Facebook page, Censor.NET reports.

Savchenko became one of the 20 female prisoners from around the world included in Power's campaign Free The 20, dedicated to the anniversary of the Beijing world conference to advance gender equality and women's rights and in anticipation of this year's Beijing 20 summit.

"Nadiya Savchenko, a Ukrainian pilot, was defending her country when she was captured by Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine in June 2014. She was smuggled across the border into Russia, and handed over to Russian authorities. Her detention in Russia has been extended again and again. She has been treated in an appalling manner, enduring relentless interrogations, solitary confinement, and forced "psychiatric evaluation." Just this week, her farcical trial started," Power wrote on Savchenko's case.

"Nadiya's continued imprisonment in Russia is indefensible and illegal. We call for her release," the U.S. UN Ambassador stressed.
