OSCE to deploy more observers and expand geography of mission in Donbas, - SMM Head Apakan. PHOTOS

On Jan. 24, Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak held talks with Chief Monitor of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) to Ukraine Ambassador Ertugul Apakan.

The parties discussed the situation in the east of Ukraine and the work of the mission.

Poltorak stressed the importance of cooperation with the OSCE SMM in the context of fragile security environment.

He emphasized the Ukrainian army observes the Minsk agreements, adding the diplomatic settlement is the only way out of the Donbas conflict.

"The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is a partner of the OSCE SMM, and we are ready for cooperation and constructive work," Stepan Poltorak said. "We're sure that the diplomatic settlement is the only way out of any conflicts."

Ambassador Ertugul Apakan thanked the president of Ukraine, the Cabinet, the MoD and Ukrainian soldiers for cooperation, and underscored that the mission staff feel support and care.

"The cease-fire is a precondition for peace. Our primary task is to make peace in the Donbas," Ambassador Apakan said. "Good communication with Ukrainian soldiers is very important for monitors in the Donbas."

The OSCE chief said the concept of the monitors' work would change: "We plan to expand geography of our mission, increase the number of the mission staff in the conflict area, and we will diversify activities."
