"Sometimes we do something just because we have to. And it is extremely rare that these actions become events of historic importance. On July 17, 2014, two patriots of Ukraine from the town of Torez took pictures of Russian BUK missile system when it passed through the town right after it launched a missile at Malaysia Airlines MH17 flight. They could not know what it was. They just took a picture of an unusual occupiers' weapon and an unusual missile launch. They just wanted to help their motherland repel the aggression of the enemy. But it turned out that their pictures have become famous all over the world and have become a key factor in exposing of the Kremlin lies, as well as the most important piece of evidence in the criminal case," Butusov writes.

"One of the organizers and active participants of Ukrainian resistance in the Donbas Vitalii Kropachov received these photos and immediately gave them to Anton Herashchenko [Interior Minister adviser - ed.]. The information about the downing of the airliner by a Russian missile immediately reached the world news agencies. Kropachov helped evacuate the authors of the photos and their cameras from the occupied territories. Now they are witnesses and evidence at the trial. Authenticity of the photos was easily identified by the expertise. The photos also helped identify the place of the missile launch," he stressed.

"It is difficult to overestimate the importance of the evidence of Russian crimes for international investigation. These photos allowed successfully winning the information war against the flood of lies which Russian propaganda machine spews. These photographs have allowed the Dutch Public Prosecutor's Office to achieve maximum accuracy in their custody. I think that the patriots of Ukraine who produced valuable evidence at their own risk deserve a state award," Butusov concluded.
