Iryna Herashchenko, the first deputy speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s representative to the humanitarian subgroup of the Trilateral Contact Group designed to settle armed conflict in the Donbas, wrote on social media, Censor.NET reports.
"Excellent and very important news: the Security Service officials have just informed President Poroshenko on the release of Ukrainian hostage Roman Savkov. The president has already congratulated Roman over the phone. Roman is still in shock and he still does not believe that this is actually happening. He was captured being severely injured, held in Makiivka jail. He’s got the diabetes but he never received medicines in captivity. His health has significantly deteriorated," she wrote.
"The first thing that the liberated Ukrainian hostages told us in Horlivka on Dec. 27 was that they were concerned about the fate of other captives. They asked to get their companions-in-arms out. They were telling about Roman and also about Oleksandr Korinkov, Serhii Hlondar, Bohdan Pantiushenko. The president spoke with the guys in a helicopter and jet as they were heading to Kyiv. The president has recently pardoned a villain to swap her for our soldier. This time they released Roman. He will now receive treatment in the military hospital. We keep struggling for the others and I believe that the rest of the families will also get good news soon. Roman is being accompanied by the SBU and my assistants. He will be able to hug his mom as early as tomorrow. It is extremely happy day for us all," the lawmaker said.
President Poroshenko also congratulated senior soldier Savkov and instructed the doctors to carry out medical examination and provide him with necessary treatment.
"I have just congratulated senior soldier of the 92nd brigade Roman Savkov released from captivity. He was taken prisoner near Krasnohorivka. I congratulate him on his second birthday. Welcome home, Roman. I'm happy that we have made it!" he wrote on social media.
