173 people convicted for separatism in Ukraine, most of them still at large


Starting from 2014, the Ukrainian courts have passed verdicts against 173 people under Article 110 of the Criminal Code - encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine.

Censor.NET reports referring to an article by Iryna Salii, where she gives the court registry data as of Aug. 23.

26 people have been sentenced to imprisonment, 125 people have been released on probation, eight people - punished by restriction of freedom, four people - acquitted.

Seven prison sentences, two suspended sentences and one acquittal have been cancelled, pending a retrial.

The convicts are mostly people that worked in election commissions during the illegal referendum in support of the "DPR" and "LPR", distributed separatist printed materials or alike information via social media, made speeches at rallies.

Most of them pleaded guilty and have been released on probation.

Some of those who fought alongside terrorists have also been sentenced under Article 110. Although the actions of militants usually fall under different articles of the Criminal Code - creation or involvement in an illegal armed group, terrorist group, etc.

So far, only one person has been convicted of separatist actions resulting in the death of people and other grave consequences. Viktor Seledtsov, a native of the Ukraine's western city of Lutsk, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. The man took part in the events in Crimea in the spring of 2014, in particular in the assault and seizure of the headquarters of the Naval Forces of Ukraine's Armed Forces. He was awarded the Medal For the Return of Crimea by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. After that, he joined one of the terrorist battalions of the "DPR".
