EU Ambassador Mingarelli asks for new election law and CEC members


EU Ambassador to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli says he is surprised that the Verkhovna Rada is so slow with replacing members of the Central Election Committee (CEC) and passing the new bill on parliamentary election.

He said during an expert forum, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrainski Novyny.

Mingarelli said Ukraine has an obstacle - no rule of law, which affects every Ukrainian's life and is a major obstacle on the way to economic growth.

The EU ambassador said the stability of the political systems depends on trust that citizens have to elected politicians and the government. In this regard, Mingarelli said, much can be done really fast. Political class should be renewed, and be assisted in this process. But for that, a new election law and the new Central Election Committee is needed. For some reasons that Mingarelli does not know these reforms have stalled. He asked when will the new law and the new committee be available, as cited by lb.ua.

Mingarelli also said it was extremely important to have e-declarations in place, and that e-statements of officials were checked.

The EU ambassador said that without the rule of law, Ukraine will have a hard time finding foreign investors.
