Lithuania launches fence construction on border with Russia

On Monday, the construction of a security fence kicked off on the Lithuanian border with Russia.

By the end of the year, the fence will be erected along the 44.6-km stretch on the Lithuanian side of the border, Censor.NET reports referring to Delfi citing the country's State Border Guard Service.

The first pillar was dug in near the village of Ramoniškės in the Šakiai district. The new security fence will be constructed in the land part of the state border on the basis of an agreement between the Lithuanian border guard authority and Gintreja company. The cost of work is estimated at 1.335 million euros, with funds being allocated from the state budget.

The segmented metal security fence will be up to two meters high and will feature additional equipment. It will extend from the junction of the Lithuanian, Polish and Russian borders toward the Lithuanian town of Vištytis and up to the Nemunas River. The 109-km long border section beyond the Nemunas has previously been equipped with technical surveillance systems.

The construction is due to be finished by Dec. 20.
