Macron, Le Pen progress to second round of presidential election in France

Upon calculation of 97 percent of received votes, two candidates made it to the second round of election, which is to be held on May 7, - Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron.

As reported by Censor.NET citing Liga, the results have been posted on the official website of France's interior ministry.

Macron has been supported by 23.86 percent of voters, Le Pen by 21.43 percent.

Right-wing candidate François Fillon received 19.94 percent of votes, and left radical party leader Jean-Luc Melenchon - 19.62 percent.

Socialist candidate Benoit Hamon gained 6.35 percent of votes. He and Fillon both conceded defeat and called on their supporters to back Macron.

"This result is historic," Le Pen told supporters on Sunday night. "It puts on me a huge responsibility to defend the French nation, its unity, its security, its culture, its prosperity and its independence. The main thing at stake in this election is the rampant globalization that is endangering our civilization."
