 Tornado's commander Onyshchenko sentenced to 11 years in prison

The Obolon district court has announced a verdict against former fighters of the disbanded Interior Ministry Tornado Company.

According to the court's ruling, former Tornado Company commander Ruslan Onyshchenko is sentenced to 11 years in prison, former deputy commander Mykola Tsukur - nine years, and former Tornado fighter Danylo "Modzhakhed" Liashuk - 10 years.

Illia Kholod - nine years;
Borys "Bison" Hulchuk - nine years;
Maksym "Achilles" Hliebov - nine years;
Anatolii "Sam" Plamadiala - eight years;
Mykyta Kushch - nine years.

Four fighters received suspended sentences: Andrii "Wolf" Demchuk, Roman "Povilnyi" Ivash, Mykyta "Slon" Svyrydovskyi, Yurii "Rem" Shevchenko.

The fighters were found guilty of abductions, carjacking, torture, unnatural sexual offences, housebreaking and other crimes. All of them were deprived of police ranks.

At the same time, the court dismissed charges of establishing a criminal organization. Each of defendants is required to pay 7,750 hryvnia of court fees.

Prosecutors and defense lawyers oppose the verdict and intend to file an appeal.

Tornado Special Forces Company was earlier a part of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine. Eight Tornado soldiers, including its commander Ruslan Onyshchenko, were detained on charges of local residents' abduction, holding them in captivity, torture, murder, rape, and a number of other serious crimes in June 2015. Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov signed the order to disband Tornado Company on July 18, 2015. The unit has been finally undone, while its commander Ruslan Onyshchenko and several soldiers are being tried.

As reported, the rally in support of the Tornado members was held outside the court during hearing of their case in August 2016. However, the law enforcement officers did not let those who were not participants in the trial to attend a closed court session which caused several clashes. More than 20 members of the National Guard and police were injured as the protesters employed sticks, stones, batons, and tear gas against them.
