Lviv garbage disposal issue comes to deadlock again, - PM Hroisman

Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Hroisman believes advanced technologies must be applied to create new waste disposal site in Lviv.

As reported by Censor.NET, the prime minister wrote on Facebook.

"I would like to once again bring up a topic of Lviv waste disposal. It seemed that we have finally figured out the way to solve this problem, but the situation seems to have come to a deadlock once again. During my most recent visit to Lviv, I proposed Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi to pick a land plot suitable for the new waste recycling plant construction.

"Mr. Andrii did pick the land plot. However, the expert group created by the order of Mr. Andrii rejected this very plot last week...

"By no means questioning the high professional level of the members of this expert group, I would like to point out that the key parameter to assess whether this land plot is suitable or not is obviously the solid waste recycling technology which is planned to be used. If it is just a waste storage, like at most Ukrainian landfills including the one in Hrybovychi village, any new waste disposal site will potentially pose the same environmental threat just like those already existing.

"However, there are very different approaches. At the time, I had the opportunity to learn how these issues were tackled in Switzerland. There are two waste recycling plants in the city of Zurich, one of which is actually in downtown (by the way, it was built over 100 years ago!) a few hundred meters from the central station, and the second one is near a crowded residential neighborhood. You will smell nothing standing right next to it! No comment is needed, I believe.

"Yet, given the current situation and the fact that the problem needs to be finally solved, I have already asked [Lviv Regional] State Administration Chairman Oleh Syniutka to assist Mr. Andrii to pick another site. And I urge Sadovyi to speed up and start actually solving the problem as quickly as possible."

Earlier, a large-scale fire broke out on Hrybovytske dump site in the vicinity of Lviv on May 30. A waste pile slid and swamped three firefighters and presumably one member of a utility provider after the fire was eliminated and the firefighters were gathering the equipment and examining the site. The body of the third victim in the waste pile slide on the landfill located on the outskirts of Lviv was found late at night on May 31. A mourning for the victims of fire at the dump site was declared in Lviv June 1.
