G7 calls to stop Donbas blockade over threat to Ukraine’s energy sector

Transport blockade of Donbas held at the demarcation line, which cut coal supplies to the government-controlled territory of Ukraine, jeopardizes Ukraine’s financial security and undermines country’s economic growth.

As reported by Censor.NET, G7 ambassadors said in a statement for UNIAN news agency.

"Ukraine's economy showed growth last year. Transport blockade jeopardizes this process and undermines energy security of millions of people. We urge all involved parties to find common approaches to resolve current problems, unblock railroad tracks and highways in order to organize legitimate trade," the statement reads.

The ambassadors also noted the need to organize trouble-free running of power plants supplying heat and energy to the citizens of Ukraine, upgrade generating facilities, and take a number of important steps to ensure long term energy supplies.

An emergency regime in Ukraine's energy sector was introduced on Feb. 17.

On Feb. 16, the National Security and Defense Council considered steps to neutralize threats to the energy security of Ukraine. Following the meeting, President Petro Poroshenko enacted a relevant NSDC decision.

On Jan. 25, anti-terrorist operation (ATO) veterans blocked the Luhansk-Popasna haul, launching a trade blockade of the occupied Donbas areas. The movement of 12 trains with a total of 700 cars has been barred.

Later, Deputy Minister for the Occupied Territories and IDPs Heorhii Tuka said the decision to launch trade blockade was extra-legal. Minister for the temporarily occupied territories and IDPs Vadym Chernysh spoke against possible ban on commodities delivery across the contact line in the Donbas: "We need to be able to deliver coal, otherwise we will face problems throughout the country."
