Merkel appeals to Putin to use his influence on separatists, - German government spokesman Seibert

Speaking on phone, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to use his influence on separatists in eastern Ukraine to stop the violence there.

Censor.NET reports referring to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty quoting German government spokesman as saying.

"The German chancellor appealed to the Russian president to use his influence on the separatists," Seibert noted.

The official said that the conversation was once again focused on the situation in the east of Ukraine and the further implementation of the Minsk agreements. According to him, given the recent escalation in the Donbas that caused numerous human casualties, both sides voiced hope the fighting would soon come to an end.

Seibert said the leaders praised the efforts of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission which helped to improve the humanitarian situation.

"The German chancellor and the Russian president agreed that new efforts must be made to secure a cease-fire and asked foreign ministers and their advisers to remain in close contact," he added.

The spike in hostilities around Avdiivka was registered on Sunday morning, Jan. 29.

After two days of fighting, Ukrainian soldiers managed to take enemy positions and improved their tactical set-up in the area.

Presidential Administration Deputy Head Kostiantyn Yelisieiev said the situation in eastern Ukraine had taken on international importance, and if Russia vetoed the deployment of a U.N. police mission in the Donbas at the next Security Council meeting, it would show its real attitude to the situation.
