German Foreign Office blames Russia for escalation of violence in Donbas

The aggravation of the situation in the Donbas has been provoked by Russia.

As reported by Censor.NET referring to Ukrinform, it was announced by German government and Federal Foreign Office official representatives Steffen Seibert and Martin Schäfer.

"There are indications that the primary responsibility for the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which is an important integral part of the territory of the Ukrainian state, rests upon the separatists, who still receive massive support from Russia," Seibert said.

In turn, Schäfer noted "there is no doubt that the responsibility for the outbreak of the crisis in Ukraine, the annexation of Crimea, and the current situation in eastern Ukraine clearly rests upon Moscow."

He said, it is extremely difficult to figure out who is to blame for launching the ongoing armed clashes around Avdiivka. Meanwhile, he stressed the fact of separatists firing at Ukrainian troops from residential areas, using locals as human shields.

Schäfer offered reassurance German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel closely monitors the Ukrainian issue. According to him, the minister raised the question during his recent visit to Washington, where he received the words of support from the new secretary of state and vice president regarding the mediation efforts of France and Germany in the Normandy Format process.

The recent spike in hostilities in the vicinity of Avdiivka was registered on Sunday morning, Jan. 29.

After two days of fighting, Ukrainian soldiers managed to take enemy positions and improved their tactical set-up in the area.

In the evening of Jan. 30, a state of emergency was declared in Avdiivka.

Presidential Administration Deputy Head Kostiantyn Yelisieiev said the situation in eastern Ukraine had taken on international importance, and if Russia vetoed the deployment of a U.N. police mission in the Donbas at the next Security Council meeting, it would show its real attitude to the situation.
