ATO is not legal ground to suspend pensions, - Valeria Lutkovska

The Ombudsperson regards the suspension of pensions as illegal activity.

This was announced by Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Valeria Lutkovska, Censor.NET reports citing 112 TV Channel.

"We stopped paying those social benefits that do not depend on the anti-terrorist operation (ATO). We stopped paying pensions illegally, since there is no such legitimate reason for suspension of pension as the ATO," Lutkovska said.

"I do not believe that a pensioner who receives 1,800-1,200 hryvnia per month would finance terrorism. As well as single mothers. She won't share her money with terrorists. But what about the coal trade on the uncontrolled territory of the Luhansk region? This is a quite serious issue,'' she said.

According to Lutkovska, Ukrainian state is obliged to pay the pensions. If there is no such mechanism to provide payments on the occupied territories, it is the problem of the state, not the pensioners.

The Cabinet of Ministers suspended social payments to residents of the occupied Donbas on Nov. 7, 2014.
