Lviv city council to gather for extraordinary session today to decide on garbage disposal

Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi says the situation with the garbage disposal in the city critical and might cause an environmental emergency. The city council is gathering for an extraordinary meeting on Thursday.

Zinkevych posted a message from the Lviv city council about an extraordinary session at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 19. The agenda of the session includes two issues: garbage disposal and 'other.'

Yesterday, Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi posted a video address on his Facebook page. He said the situation with garbage disposal in the city has reached its critical point and might cause an environmental emergency.

"The potential environmental crisis might become an international one, with consequences felt by neighboring countries," the Lviv mayor said.

Sadovyi said the city has been blocked from landfill sites for eight months now, and faced refusals to accept garbage from Lviv in all landfills of Ukraine. The mayor said they addressed state bodies and informed international environmental organizations about possible environmental emergency in Lviv area.

A large-scale fire broke out at Hrybovychi dump site in the vicinity of Lviv May 30, 2016. A waste pile slid and swamped several firefighters after the fire was extinguished and they were gathering the equipment and examining the site. Three emergency workers died. After the incident, the dump site in Hrybovychi was closed, and the city left with no landfills to dispose of its garbage.
