 Poroshenko appoints Maksym Stepanov as Odesa region governor

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko appointed Maksym Stepanov as the new head of the Odesa Regional State Administration.

"I am confident that my today's decision to appoint the person who won the competition for the post of the chairman of the Regional State Administration - Maksym Stepanov - is the right decision. The person with two university degrees; the person, who is well known in the Odessa region, who has previous experience as the First Deputy Chairman of the Regional State Administration; the person determined to do his job here instead of travelling abroad; the person determined to undertake clear commitments and fulfill them," Poroshenko said.

Poroshenko noted that Stepanov was not only the economic person but a public figure as well.

On Nov. 7, 2016, Mikheil Saakashvili resigned from the post of head of the Odesa Regional State Administration. President Petro Poroshenko accepted his resignation.

Petro Poroshenko later said the decision of Odesa governor Saakashvili to resign and shift to the opposition was possible in a democratic state. "A number of prominent Georgians were once invited to Ukraine to implement reforms. Some have decided to change the orbit and do politics in Ukraine after losing elections in Georgia," the president said.

The head of state signed a decree on Saakashvili's resignation from the post of the head of the Odesa Regional State Administration on Nov. 9.
