Canadian of Ukrainian descent to head country's Foreign Ministry

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is shuffling his key cabinet ministers. Chrystia Freeland, born to a Ukrainian mother, is poised to become minister of foreign affairs of Canada.

Freeland, 48, has held the post of minister of international trade of Canada since November 2015.

She started her career as a journalist. In the 90s, Freeland worked as a stringer in Ukraine for Financial Times, The Washington Post and The Economist.

Later on, Freeland held various editorial positions with Financial Times, Globe and Mail and Thomson Reuters. In 2013, she was elected to the Parliament of Canada.

The politician has been among those banned from entering Russia since March 2014.
