Russian militants clash with Ukrainian soldiers in Luhansk direction, assaults recorded all along contact line, - ATO speaker

A clash between the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) forces and Russian militants occurred in the vicinity of Novozvanivka village in Luhansk direction.

As reported by Censor.NET referring to Ukrinform, speaker for the Defense Ministry on the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) issues Oleksandr Motuzianyk said at a press briefing on Saturday.

"Luhansk direction: the clash between the anti-terrorist operation soldiers and Russian militants took place in the vicinity of Novozvanivka village near Popasna," Motuzianyk said.

According to him, the Ukrainian troops' positions came under shelling as early as at 2 a.m. Dec. 31. After that, two short provocations were committed in the afternoon. Finally, 15 strong enemy squad being covered with mortars went on the offensive.

"The encounter took place after 4 p.m. The accurate retaliatory fire of Ukrainian soldiers forced the invaders to retreat. After a while, the enemy launched another unsuccessful offensive operation. Both attacks lasted 50 minutes. No casualties among the Ukrainian troops were reported," Motuzianyk said.

In addition, the attacks were recorded near Stanytsia Luhanska and Novooleksandrivka, but no heavy weapons were used by the enemy there.

15 attacks and one clash were recorded in Luhansk direction.

In Donetsk direction, the enemy committed attacks almost across the entire contact line. According to the Defense Ministry, nine enemy attacks were committed in Donetsk direction over the past day.

The situation in Mariupol direction remains unchanged: the major part of hostilities took place in the south. Talakivka and Shyrokyne came under three mortar strikes yesterday. The enemy was using light weapons there starting from 12 a.m. until late at night.
