New US sanctions against Russia take effect

New economic sanctions against the Russian Federation in connection with the occupation of Crimea have come into force.

The information was published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, Dec. 27, Censor.NET reports.

The sanctions list has been updated with 23 entities in Russia and Crimea as well as seven individuals.

The extended sanctions list now includes President of National Media Group Kirill Kovalchuk, The Rossiya Bank board members Dmitry Lebedev, Mikhail Klishin, Dmitry Mansurov and Mikhail Dedov, Sobinbank board chairman Oleg Minaev and businessman Evgeny Prigozhin. The companies added to the list in particular include: Institut Stroiproekt, Crimean Ports, Crimean Railway, Ruschemtrade LLC, Trans-Flot JSC and Transpetrochart Co. Ltd.

According to the Embassy of Ukraine in the U.S., new sanctions make Crimea "economically toxic" and block Russian defense industry activities by restricting the work of 15 companies.

On Dec. 19, the EU Council decided to extend the sanctions against Russia for another six months until July 31, 2017.
