Former State Duma of Russia MP is witness in Yanukovych's high treason case, - Prosecutor's Office

Military prosecutor Ruslan Kravchenko has asked former president Viktor Yanukovych's lawyer Vitalii Serdiuk to help the investigation with obtaining a letter by Yanukovych from the Russian Presidential Administration and the Federation Council. In this letter dated 2014, Viktor Yanukovych, considering himself acting president of Ukraine, asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine.

Prosecutor Ruslan Kravchenko told Censor.NET.

Kravchenko believes the investigation has enough evidence to suspect fugitive Ukraine's president Viktor Yanukovych of high treason.

"We have managed to obtain unique evidence regarding Yanukovych himself, for instance, from former MP of the Russian State Duma Ilya Ponomarev and others. I cannot disclose their testimony so far, they constitute a secrecy of investigation," the prosecutor told Censor.NET.

The prosecutor's office has also requested Yanukovych's lawyer Vitalii Serdiuk to assist the investigation with obtaining the letter from Yanukovych in which he was asking Russia to deploy its troops in Ukraine.

"If the lawyer supports compliance with procedural norms, let his client also comply with them! The state prosecution and the court will consider it an extenuation and cooperation with the investigation," Kravchenko said.

On Dec. 24, prosecutor's office asked the Pechersk district court of Kyiv to allow investigation of the Yanukovych's case in absentia, as long as the fugitive president has been put on the wanted list. The prosecutor's office has a sanction for his detention. However, during the hearing, Yanukovych's lawyers asked for the judge's disqualification.

"Currently, the petition of disqualification of Judge Khrystyna Tarasiuk has been transferred to another judge, and the decision should be made today, we just don't know the time," Kravchenko said.

Yesterday's activities of Viktor Yanukovych's lawyers are deemed an attempt to extend the process.

"Yesterday Yanukovych's lawyers showed the participants of the process what talented actors they are; after three nonsense inquiries they ended up without arguments and filed a fourth inquiry on the judge disqualification. This confirms that the lawyers do not want this process and extend it by all possible means!" the prosecutor said.
