211 Ukrainian soldiers killed in action, 256 died of noncombat causes in 2016

211 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in action in the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) area in 2016.

As reported by Censor.NET, this was stated by Public Relations Office of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in response to the request by BBC Ukraine.

"The combat losses in 2016 amount to 211 soldiers, non-combat - to 256 persons," the report reads.

The agency also provided report on losses in equipment: "The Armed Forces of Ukraine lost more than 100 units of arms and military equipment in 2016 as a result of the damage inflicted in combats."

According to the report, about 7,500 servicemen signed contracts with the army this year.

The Ukrainian army also received 1,000 units of new (upgraded) weapons and military equipment. About 700 units were additionally refurbished and returned to the Armed Forces.

As reported, Chief of Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces Viktor Muzhenko said Dec. 6 that 3,064 members of security agencies including 2,636 servicemen were killed since the beginning of the armed conflict in the Donbas. 2,148 of them were killed in action.

According to Main Military Prosecutor Anatoly Matios, the non-combat losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces amounted to 1,294 persons (no members of other security agencies included) as of June 10, 2016. The non-battle casualties were mostly caused by diseases, road traffic and other accidents, poisoning (including by alcohol), suicides and murder.
