US Ambassador Yovanovitch names priorities to effectively fight corruption in Ukraine

Ukraine must focus on three things to effectively combat corruption.

U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch said this at a public forum on the occasion of the International Anti-Corruption Day, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

"I suggest three steps, which are already on the agenda. First, to create a transparent system of independent verification of property declarations," Yovanovitch said.

The second step, according to the diplomat, is providing more resources to the independent anti-corruption bodies. In this context, she stressed the need to allow the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) to tap phone calls.

The third point, the ambassador says, is establishing an anti-corruption court to deliver legal and fair judgments in cases investigated by SAP (Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office) and NABU.

"This is a fairly difficult task. However, given Ukraine faces pervasive corruption, it should give a systemic response. I know that Ukraine will win this fight," Yovanovitch summed up.
