Censor.NET reports citing the Communications department of the National Police of Ukraine.
"This decision of the National Police of Ukraine leadership applies to those Berkut members, who are the prime suspects in the criminal proceedings into crimes against protesters on the Maidan Nezalezhnosti in December 2013 and February 2014," the agency explained.
"Taking into account the importance of the investigation into crimes committed against the participants of the Revolution of Dignity, the National Police of Ukraine sent a letter to the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine requesting to specify the procedural status of the police officers involved in criminal investigations into crimes against the participants of the Revolution of Dignity, namely those officers, who were members of Berkut riot police detachments during the specified period.
"The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine submitted information about 13 individuals who were serving there at that time. According to this letter, the pre-trial custody or house arrest were imposed against six employees. Besides, no measure of restraint was imposed against four Berkut ex-soldiers," the statement treads.
However, the leadership of the National Police of Ukraine suspended from duty all 13 Berkut ex-officers pending verdict. The issue regarding their further service in the ranks of the National Police will be considered by the certification commission through the mechanism stipulated by the Law once the investigation is completed.
The National Police press office reminded that Berkut company ex-Commander Yevhen Antonov, who was identified as an active participant of the crackdown on the students on the night of Nov. 30, 2013 was dismissed from the law enforcement agency long ago, even before recertification of the police officers kicked off.
