Court releases Berkut officer suspected of Maidan killings, - Horbatiuk

A Berkut riot police officer accused of murdering Maidan protesters on Feb. 18 near Kriposnyi Lane in Kyiv has been remanded to house arrest by the Kyiv Court of Appeal.

Head of the Special Investigations Department of the Prosecutor General's Office Serhii Horbatiuk told Ukrainska Pravda, Censor.NET reports.

An officer of the Kharkiv Berkut unit who is not named is accused of murdering people with a shotgun and hunting cartridges.

"He was released from custody right in the courtroom. The house arrest extends from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.," Horbatiuk said.

According to him, Judge Valerii Lashevych did not explain his ruling.

"The full text of the decision will be read out on Nov. 22," Horbatiuk added.

He said the decision was final and unappealable.

"They hope he won't run away. Now it is the court's entire responsibility," Horbatiuk noted.

Lashevych is known to have made similar decisions on Berkut officers for several times now.
