Russia's ideology of hatred in occupied Crimea threatens genocide, - Yelchenko

Manifestations of genocide are usually accompanied by hatred of individual states to entire nations. This happened in the Holocaust, and unfortunately, is occurring in Russian-occupied Crimea.

As reported by Censor.NET referring to Ukrinform, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko said during the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy.

"We must remember that the proliferation of hatred often precedes and accompanies genocide. Leaders that planned slaughter during the Holocaust as well as in Rwanda and Srebrenica spread an ideology of hatred," the Ukrainian diplomat recalled.

According to him, the world, unfortunately, is witnessing an incitement to hatred and persecution of innocent people "authorized at the state level."

"By the illegal occupation of Crimea, the Russian government violates the rights and freedoms of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars, forcing them to leave the Crimean peninsula, their historic land. Some of them were subjected to torture and kidnapped, many of them were limited in exercising their human rights," Yelchenko remarked.

Ukraine's representative called on the international community not to remain indifferent to such crimes.

"Our common responsibility to future generations is to ensure that those who commit crimes against humanity be brought to justice, and that such crimes do not recur in the future," Yelchenko added.

Three diplomatic missions to the United Nations - from Ukraine, Israel and the United States - organized on Thursday, Oct. 13 a memorial evening in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Babyn Yar massacre in Kyiv.

The event was held in the hall of the UN Trusteeship Council. The guests observed a minute of silence in memory of 150,000 people killed in the tragedy and listened to the president of Ukraine's video message. The permanent representative of Ukraine, Israel and the United States to the United Nations as well as witnesses of the tragedy delivered speeches.
