 EU's new sanctions against Russia may freeze Nord Stream II project, - MEP Weber

The European Parliament has confirmed that the construction of the Nord Stream II pipeline may be halted with another package of EU sanctions against Russia.

Censor.NET reports referring to Gazeta.ru quoting Pedro Lopez de Pablo, spokesman of MEP Manfred Weber.

As noted, Weber, leader of the European People's Party, made this proposal at the plenary session of the European Parliament on Oct. 5.

According to the spokesman, the European Parliament is discussing Russian sanctions as part of general political debate, while the final decision will be only adopted by the Council of the European Union at the level of foreign ministers.

Nord Stream II is a gas pipeline project intended to secure the transport of natural gas from Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea, bypassing transit countries.

On Oct. 5, after Weber made a proposal to freeze the construction of Nord Stream II, Gerhard Schröder, former German chancellor, was appointed chairman of the project's board of directors.
