Ukrainian government obtains US special mission’s recommendations for reforming customs

The U.S. Special Mission has delivered its recommendations to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine as for the reform of the customs service.

This was announced by U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch at a meeting of the U.S. delegation on customs reform with Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Hroisman in Kyiv on Monday, Censor.NET reports referring to Interfax-Ukraine.

Marie Yovanovitch refused to disclose the details of the work carried out by her colleagues from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. However, the diplomat said that they had held a great number of consultations with Ukraine's government officials and agencies and disclosed this information in the report they eventually submitted. The ambassador expressed hope that the Ukrainian authorities would consider it comprehensible and contributing to the transformation of the given sector as well as an ambitious and realistic one.

According to Yovanovitch, the implementation of the recommendations is impossible without government's commitment and focus on the reform. She stressed that the reform should result in creation of a skilled, efficient, and trustworthy Customs Service of Ukraine promoting trade and fighting against corruption.

According to Hroisman, the Cabinet of Ministers intends to review and approve these recommendations as a roadmap for reform in the customs service.
