"Kuchma should ask for forgiveness from me and my children, sitting in the dock," - Myroslava Gongadze

The widow of killed Ukrainian journalist Heorhii Gongadze Myroslava says Ukraine's ex-President Leonid Kuchma should bear criminal responsibility for the murder of her husband.

She said this in an interview with Vysokyi Zamok, Censor.NET reports.

In particular, Myroslava Gongadze stressed she had no personal meetings with Leonid Kuchma after the murder of her husband, adding he should ask for forgiveness from her and her children, sitting in the dock.

"No, I have never [met with Leonid Kuchma personally - ed.]. I don't have to look into his eyes, he has to look into mine. And ask for forgiveness from me and my children, sitting in the dock," Myroslava Gongadze said, noting his imprisonment "would purify the whole Ukraine."

Drawing parallels between the murder of Heorhii Gongadze, and Pavel Sheremet, Myroslava Gongadze said the killings have a lot in common, "after all, both Heorhii and Pavel became sacred victims."

"I am convinced this was a political assassination However, we have to wait for the results of the probe. I hope it won't last for 16 years, as was the case with Heorhi's murder," the widow noted.

As previously reported, journalist Heorhii Gongadze was killed in the fall of 2000. On March 15, 2008, the Kyiv Appeals Court declared three former officers of the Interior Ministry External Surveillance Department Valerii Kostenko, Mykola Protasov, and Oleksandr Popovych guilty of the murder. They were sentenced to 12 to 13 years in prison.

In January 2013, the court also sentenced former head of the External Surveillance Department Oleksii Pukach to life imprisonment for the murder of the journalist. Meanwhile, Gongadze's family still believes that real contractors remain at large.
