Poroshenko instructs Foreign Ministry to sue Russia for violation of UN Sea Law Convention

Ukrainian border guards have recently recorded violations of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea by the Russian Federation.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko instructed the Foreign Ministry to institute arbitration proceedings against the Russian Federation for violations of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, Censor.NET reports citing the statement of spokesperson for the president Sviatoslav Tseholko on Twitter.

The head of state also stressed that the claim was also filed due to the misappropriation of Ukraine's energy resources meaning that Russia was stealing oil and gas from Ukraine's offshore. According to Poroshenko, the naval reserves are being stolen and Ukrainian waters are being polluted which generates negative impact on the ecology of the Black Sea including due to the construction of the bridge across the Kerch Strait.

"I instruct the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to sign and send to the Russian Federation a notice of instituted arbitration in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea no later than today," the president said. He also noted that Ukraine's legal position was solid and based on clear evidence. The head of state added that Ukraine would prove by means of arbitration the facts of stealing of the natural resources by the Russian Federation and the infliction of damage to the environment of the specified waters.Источник: https://censor.net.ua/en/n405970
