As reported by Censor.NET citing the press service of the organization, the activist said that the incident took place in Podilskyi district of Kyiv on the night of July 16.
According to Marusov, first a thief stole a bag with his laptop, in which he stored the organization's activity files archive over the past few years. A police patrol arrived at the scene. However, according to the activist, another perpetrator attacked him in the eyes of the police officers, who were just watching the attack without trying to protect him. Marusov suffered another attack in the morning as he was returning from the police precinct: an offender tried to take away his camera, which he had earlier captured the attackers on.
"I am inclined to regard this incident as to an undue pressure on the Ukrainian branch of Transparency International in connection with uncompromising anti-corruption activities. Transparency International Ukraine jointly with the British branch of the organization held a seminar with the participation of international experts on the introduction of independent anti-corruption courts and public efforts against corruption in the defense sector last week. In addition, we have recently made a critical statement condemning the reinstatement of the military prosecutor Kostiantyn Kulyk suspected by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of illicit enrichment. Thus many people have a grudge against our organization," Marusov said.
Transparency International Ukraine CEO Yaroslav Yurchyshyn shares his colleague's opinion: "We believe that this may be connected to the recent growth in anti-corruption activities of our organization. Anyway, we expect resolute actions of the National Police and urge to conclude investigation of this case as soon as possible."
