A pre-trial investigation into MP Onyshchenko's criminal activity has exposed a criminal group that operated under the cover of individuals with lawyer licenses.

Censor.NET reports quoting NABU's statement.

Lawyers A.Tsyhankov, A.Kopus, and V.Makovskyi are reported to have been engaged in the activity. Other persons, including lawyers, are being checked for involvement.

It has been established that lawyer Tsyhankov's office was used for managing funds derived from the resale of state gas.

Tsyhankov, abusing his lawyer's safeguards under the law, transferred funds from the accounts of fictitious firms to his own account.

"Both deputies and lawyers are equal before the law... The NABU reserves the right to carry out the whole range of necessary investigative actions in respect of all categories of citizens, including lawyers, as prescribed by the law," Director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau Artem Sytnyk stated.

On July 5, 2016, as part of the investigation of a corruption scheme to resell gas produced under joint operating agreements with Ukrhasvydobuvannia PJSC, in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code and on the basis of investigative judge's decisions, law enforcers conducted 21 searches, including eight searches of the premises and vehicles belonging to or used by lawyers A.Tsyhankov, A.Kopus, and V.Makovskyi.

Earlier, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine raided the office of MP Oleksandr Onyshchenko March 16. The NABU stated that the searches were carried out under the pretrial investigation of criminal case initiated into abuse of office during sale of the natural gas jointly extracted with Ukrhazvydobuvannia SE.

Prosecutor General's Office received a motion of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) to lift the immunity of the people's deputy Oleksandr Onyshchenko in June.

On June 16, Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yurii Lutsenko drafted a motion requesting the Verkhovna Rada's consent for criminal prosecution, detention, and pretrial confinement of MP Oleksandr Onyshchenko. The Procedural Committee of the parliament allowed considering the withdrawal of parliamentary immunity of MP Onyshchenko on June 29.

On July 5, the parliament approved detention and arrest of people's deputy Onyshchenko.
