"Onyshchenko's case might reveal a grand flywheel of corruption," - PM Hroisman

Lifting of parliamentary immunity and arrest of MP Oleksandr Onyshchenko could have helped unveil a huge corrupt scheme.

This was announced by Prime Minister Volodymyr Hroisman, speaking to journalists, Censor.NET informs citing 112 Ukraine.

"It's a pity, because immunity should be lifted in general for such economic suspicions of crimes. This procedure simply allowed the person to flee. I believe he could have told a lot of interesting things, including who he dealt with, what political parties he was financing, and it would have revealed a grand flywheel of corruption.

"I believe that people who are involved in this case know a lot. I think we now need to follow through all those cases that have been initiated," Hroisman said.

Earlier, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine raided the office of MP Oleksandr Onyshchenko March 16. The NABU stated that the searches were carried out under the pretrial investigation of criminal case initiated into abuse of office during sale of the natural gas jointly extracted with Ukrhazvydobuvannia SE.

Prosecutor General's Office received a motion of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) to lift the immunity of the people's deputy Oleksandr Onyshchenko in June.

On June 16, Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yurii Lutsenko drafted a motion requesting the Verkhovna Rada's consent for criminal prosecution, detention, and pretrial confinement of MP Oleksandr Onyshchenko. The Procedural Committee of the parliament allowed considering the withdrawal of parliamentary immunity of MP Onyshchenko on June 29.
