MP threatens metropolitan over religious issues

Yesterday, June 23, a 39-year-old Kyiv resident, vicar of Kyiv metropolitan, filed a statement to police about threats of bodily harm made to him by a member of parliament. The conflict arouse over Ukrainian orthodoxy issues.

This is reported by Censor.NET citing the communications department of National Police in the Rivne region.

The conflict arouse on the territory of Korets Sviato-Troitskyi female monastery between a 53-year-old MP, resident of Kyiv, and the priest, who came to a service. As stated by the vicar, the MP initiated the quarrel, was using rude language towards the priest, threatened with bodily harm and attempted a fight because of disagreements over Ukrainian orthodoxy, the police said.

Law enforcers are conducting a check that will result in a relevant procedural decision.

Former deputy of the Rivne regional council Stepan Movchan informed that the conflict occurred between opposition MP Vadym Novinskyi and Metropolitan of Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi Oleksandr Drabynko. Personal data provided by the police match those of Novinskyi and Drabynko.

As known, Drabynko is a proponent of Ukrainian orthodox autonomy from the Russian Orthodox church. Novinskyi has been known since Yanukovych era as an opponent of pro-Ukrainian position within the Ukrainian orthodox church.
