Olenivka shelling is cynical provocation by militants, - ATO press center

The anti-terrorist operation (ATO) press center has made a statement regarding the false information, spread by representatives of illegal armed groups, on the tragic incident in the village of Olenivka (the Donetsk region) on April 27, 2016.

Censor.NET reports quoting ATO press center.

The statement notes: "Based on preliminary analysis of the situation surrounding the tragic events in Olenivka, we advise as follows.

"The distance from the nearest Ukrainian army position to the scene is 6.6 km.

"Considering the specifications of 82-mm mortars, we can say that they could not be used at such a distance, as the 2B14 Podnos mortar has a maximum firing range of 3,000 meters, and the 2B9 Vasilek mortar - 4,200 meters.

"Thus, an effective use of the specified mortars can only be possible from militant-controlled territory.

"It should also be noted that according to the Minsk agreements, heavy weapons over 100-mm, in particular 120-mm mortars and 122-mm guns, have been withdrawn at a specified distance. Ukrainian units didn't move such weapons towards the demarcation line, which is confirmed by OSCE SMM representatives.

"It is important to emphasize that Russia's observers at the JCCC did not record a single case of using artillery by the Armed Forces of Ukraine towards Olenivka on the night of April 26-27, 2016.

"Considering the above, the tragic incident in Olenivka ia a cynical, premeditated terrorist act organized by Russian occupation troops. In order to discredit the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy is ready to shell civilians in the areas under their controlled.

"We express our condolences to the families and friends of those killed in this terrible tragedy."
