“Sanctions against Russia must only be lifted after Crimea de-occupation, otherwise they will have no effect at all,” – Mejlis Head Chubarov

Western sanctions imposed against Russia must only be lifted following de-occupation of Crimea. Otherwise their effect will be minimal.

Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov expressed such an opinion in an interview with Ukrinform, Censor.NET informs.

"We realize that sanctions were imposed successively. The first of them were imposed in connection with Crimea (they were very nonthreatening and insignificant). The consequences of the sanctions imposed in connection with the events in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions were more drastic. And we do not think that the constant calls to lift sanctions imposed in connection with hostilities in the East after implementation of the Minsk agreements serve the interests of Ukraine. We believe that sanctions must be lifted only after de-occupation of Crimea," Chubarov said.

He admits that the current position of many western politicians, including the German ones, is that the issue of sanctions against Russia "should be considered step by step". "But we believe it to be the imitation of the process that will have no effect at all," the leader of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people said.

Chubarov also said that the Crimean Tatars are grateful to the international community for its reaction on the ban of the Mejlis. Chubarov is confident that such demonstrations of support "pave the way for future approaches that will make Russia to leave Crimea".
