Speaking at the G5 summit in Hannover, Renzi recalled that the implementation of the South Stream project had been once stopped precisely because it threatened to cut Ukraine off the gas transportation route to the EU. Thus, the PM noted he just did not see how it was possible to say "yes" to Nord Stream II.

About 10 EU member states strongly oppose the construction of Nord Stream's second line from Russia. In addition, the European Commission considers the project to be unprofitable. The official position of the EU involves the reduction of energy dependence on Russia.
