Court starts examining evidence in ‘diamond prosecutors’ case

Holosiivskyi district court in Kyiv continues hearing the indictment against former Deputy Head of the Main Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office Volodymyr Shapakin and former Deputy Prosecutor of Kyiv region Oleksandr Korniiets, charged of taking bribes.

The hearing began at 9:50 a.m. The Court started examining the evidence, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrainski Novyny.

The prosecutors brought 23 volumes of evidence in the case of the so-called "diamond prosecutors" at today's session of Holosiivskyi district court in Kyiv. Thus the prosecution fulfilled the court's decision taken at the last hearing to provide written evidence in its entirety to attach it to the case, UNIAN informed.

However, the lawyers of former prosecutors Korniiets and Shapakin, as well as defenders of businessman Valerii Hybalenko stated that not all of the provided volumes contained evidence, with some of them being reference documents. Therefore, according to the defense, the prosecutors should arrange these documents in order to separate the real evidence from the reference documents.

In turn, the prosecution noted that there was no point in it as all the documents submitted to the court by the prosecutors as evidence would be examined in the course of the trial since it was the court that should assess them.

Following short deliberations, the judges obliged the prosecution to inform the court which documents each of the volumes contained.

The prosecution is currently reading out the contents of the volumes.
