Kissinger claims Russia-US relations worst since Cold War

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger believes U.S.-Russia relations are now much worse than they were during the Cold War.

As reported by Censor.NET, in his article for The National Interest he urged to build a new concept of strategic partnership between Russia and the United States, providing for the settlement of disputes.

"Mutual trust has been dissipated on both sides. Confrontation has replaced cooperation," Kissinger said. According to him, there is a tendency to "demonize, if not the other country, then its leaders." As a result, the United States and Russia have revived talks of a new Cold War.

The former U.S. secretary of state stressed "the danger today is less a return to military confrontation than the consolidation of a self-fulfilling prophecy" about deterioration of relations.

"The long-term interests of both countries call for a world that transforms the contemporary turbulence and flux into a new equilibrium which is increasingly multipolar and globalized," Kissinger wrote.

He also expressed his opinion about the future of Ukraine and Syria. The former, he said, "needs to be embedded in the structure of European and international security architecture in such a way that it serves as a bridge between Russia and the West, rather than as an outpost of either side."

As for the latter, Kissinger believes that neither local nor regional authorities can find a solution on their own. "Compatible U.S.-Russian efforts coordinated with other major powers could create a pattern for peaceful solutions in the Middle East and perhaps elsewhere," the former U.S. secretary of state said.

On Feb. 3, President of the aggressor country Vladimir Putin held a meeting with former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger at his Novo-Ogaryovo residence. According to Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov, the Russian leader and the U.S. diplomat have long-standing relationship - they have met more than 10 times.
