Tallies to become key challenge at local polls, - Yatseniuk

Counting of votes at Ukraine's local elections can become a major problem of the current electoral process.

This was stated by Prime Minister of Ukraine Arsenii Yatseniuk, Censor.NET informs referring to Interfax-Ukraine.

"The main problem we are to face now is vote counting. I had a close look at ballots, staying in the booth for quite a long time, I scrutinized them. And a thought came to me that it seemed like we voted for open lists [in the parliament - ed.]. However, parties still prevail over persons representing them," he told reporters after voting at a polling station in Kyiv.

In this context, the prime minister said that the main challenge to be faced would be an honest vote counting so that these polls would be as transparent as the presidential and parliamentary elections last year.

"These are local elections, not national, and I expect they will result in the repair of roads, schools, and hospitals as well as the proper use of local budgets, as billions of funds have been transferred to the local level," the prime minister stressed.

He recalled that on the eve of the polls, the Interior Ministry met with NGOs to discuss a cooperation at the elections in order to prevent fraud.

"The Central Election Commission is in charge of electoral process, while the government is obliged to ensure the financing of election campaigns, which has been done, and the Interior Ministry is obliged to ensure the rule of law, which is also in place. Therefore, it is very important that this voting was calm, since the law was fundamentally and radically amended, and we are voting under this law for the first time in Ukraine's history. However, the most important is vote counting under the new law, which requires both professionalism of the members of election commissions as well as integrity, transparency, and strict control of the observers and members of election commissions," Yatseniuk stated.

He declined to say who he had supported, referring to the secrecy of vote.
