"Diamond" prosecutor Korniiets faces UAH 3 mln bail in extortion case

The Pechersk district court of Kyiv has decided on the measure of restraint for Oleksandr Korniiets, former deputy prosecutor of the Kyiv region, following charges of extortion and misappropriation of another's property.

Censor.NET reports.

Infamous prosecutor Korniiets has been remanded on bail of UAH 3.045 mln (about $134,679).

The court has refused the prosecution requesting to take him into custody. However, prosecutors said they were partly satisfied with the decision of the court, namely, the amount of the bail.

Earlier, the prosecution asked for a UAH 5 mln bail, should the corresponding measure of restraint be chosen.

Korniiets said in court he did not have enough funds to pay such a large sum, because all the money had allegedly been spent to post the bail in the previous case on charges of receiving a bribe. After the session, Korniiets noted he would try to establish a special fund to raise the necessary sum to cover the second bail.

The "diamond" prosecutor said he would appeal the decision and demand to cancel it in full.

As previously reported, the former deputy prosecutor of the Kyiv region is suspected of committing crimes under three articles.

July 6, the General Prosecutor's Office and the Security Service of Ukraine detained Deputy Head of the PGO Investigation Department Volodymyr Shapakin and Deputy Prosecutor of the Kyiv region Oleksandr Korniiets on suspicion of receiving a bribe of UAH 3 mln.
