Russia's actions may lead to nuclear disaster, - NSDC Secretary Turchynov

A massive missile attack by Russian warships in the Caspian Sea on Syrian territory significantly aggravates the situation in the combat zone.

This was stated by Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksandr Turchynov, Censor.NET reports.

He recalled that Russia's warships in the Caspian Sea, including the Gepard-class frigate Dagestan and the Buyan-M-class corvettes Grad Sviyazhsk, Uglich and Veliky Ustyug, delivered a cruise missile strike on targets in Syria in the provinces of Raqqa, Idlib, Aleppo.

"Overall, 26 sea-based cruise missiles 3M14 were fired from the Kalibr NK (Klub) VLS launchers," the NSDC secretary said, stressing that the Russian Navy, for the first time in its history, used the sea-based cruise missiles 3M14 in combat. "Previously, they were fired only during tests and exercises," he added.

According to Oleksandr Turchynov, the use of cruise missiles by the Russian Armed Forces to destroy targets in Syria can not be explained by military expediency, "because the hit targets were within the reach of Russian aircraft." "Kremlin's goal is to demonstrate the international community the determination and ability of the Russian army to use powerful missiles," he added, noting that these missiles are also capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. "A missile with a conventional warhead can hit a target at a distance of more than 1,500 km, while a nuclear warhead missile - at a distance of more than 2,600 km. One missile carries 400 kilograms of explosion," he explained.

According to the NSDC Secretary, the use of such weapons creates an extremely dangerous precedent, "accustoming the international community to passively overlook combat use of missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads."

"Such actions of the Russian Federation is a real and very dangerous step towards provoking a global military conflict which may involve the use of nuclear weapons," Oleksandr Turchynov summed up.
