SBU unmasked group of illegal transplantologists who recruited donors among poor Ukrainians

The Security Service of Ukraine together with the police detained three Ukrainian citizens and a citizens of an Asian country who were members of a transnational organized criminal group that specialized in illegal transplantation of human organs.

The criminals, who had connections with some health care facilities in Asia, recruited potential kidney donors among poor Ukrainian villagers during 2013-2015. Then the donors crossed the border to participate in illegal organ transplants.

"The criminals managed to send abroad 25 donors, citizens of both Ukraine and neighboring countries," the statement reads.

Criminal proceeding has been opened according to part 3 of Article 28 and part 1 of Article 143 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of the legal order of transplantation of human organs and tissues committed by an organized group).
