EU leaders assured Syria issue not mixed with Ukraine issue, Poroshenko says

President Petro Poroshenko's yesterday bilateral negotiations with UK Prime Minister David Cameron and Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, as well as short meeting with President of France Francois Hollande were dedicated to discussion of security situation and coordination of actions.

This was announced by the presidential press service, Censor.NET reports.

"We enlisted clear support for Ukraine," the head of state told journalists in New York.

"We were assured that the issue of Syria cannot be mixed with the issue of Ukraine," the president stated.

According to Poroshenko, the meetings were dedicated to discussion of requirements on de-escalation of the conflict, withdrawal of Russian troops from the occupied territories of the Donbas, and liberation of Crimea. Expansion of economic cooperation, debt restructuring, and collaboration within IMF have been also discussed.

The president said the parties had coordinated positions on the eve of the meeting in the Normandy format that would be held on Oct. 2 in Paris.

Answering the question on the Donbas fake elections, Poroshenko emphasized that the stance on this matter remained unchanged - fake elections pose a serious treat to the Minsk process.

Speaking of the veto right of permanent members of the UN Security Council, the president said that the given issue was being widely discussed at the General Assembly.

"It doesn't go about deprivation of the veto right. It goes about the imposition of certain restrictions in case of mass killings of people. Today, veto right virtually provides a license to kill," the president noted.

According to Poroshenko, the number of states supporting the stance is increasing.

The president of Ukraine is confident that all permanent members of the UN Security Council, except Russia, will agree to abolish the veto right in cases like the annexation of Crimea or the MH-17 tragedy.
