NATO's doors are open to Ukraine, – Poroshenko

The country needs to undertake a series of reforms to meet the criteria of the Alliance.

President Poroshenko said in an interview to Voice of America, Censor.NET reports.

According to him, meeting NATO criteria is the same as meeting EU membership criteria…

"The are the same by 98%. NATO now is the most effective security mechanism in the world, after the UN Security Council. Will the NATO membership be voted now, so that Ukraine is invited? No. And we fully understand that. The question has been provocative. Has Ukraine requested membership? No. But the main changes are here [pointing to his head - ed.], and this is understanding of Ukrainian relationship," Poroshenko said in an interview with the Voice of America published Friday.

He claimed that over 50 percent of Ukrainians supported Ukraine's bid for NATO membership for the first time in the country's history. "This is a huge shift in public opinion," Poroshenko told VOA.

The president also noted that he could decide to hold a referendum on Ukraine's membership in NATO. "You're asking about the position of our international partners, but I cannot give you the information. During the NATO summit in Bucharest, it was stated that "the door to NATO is open for Ukraine. Please, do not knock on the door. Reform your country. Build peace in Ukraine together with international partners. And everything will be fine," the president said.
