"We are definitely going to increase number of contracts. I have given relevant instructions to the Defense Ministry and the General Staff. I believe it is a strategic view on formation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces," Poroshenko said at the meeting of the National Security and Defense Council.

According to him, first of all, units to serve in high-risk areas and near the border are concerned, which require technical expertise and costly training.

The president also noted that the draft will be preserved. He says that no army in the world is fully equipped with contract soldiers.

In his opinion, it should be kept in mind given persistent threat from Russia.

"The military threat from the East is a visible perspective, unfortunately, for dozens of years on. Each new generation must have an army experience. It can be obtained only through rigorous military preparation... If we had not had hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians with military experience, how would we have repelled the aggressor?"
