 US welcomes vote by Ukraine’s parliament on draft constitutional amendments on decentralization and urges to bring to justice those responsible for violence outside Parliament, - US Department of State

The U.S. Department of State welcomed the Verkhovna Rada legislation amending the Constitution in terms of decentralization and called on to bring to justice the perpetrators guilty of violence near the building of the Ukrainian parliament.

U.S. Department of State Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner announced at a briefing in Washington Aug. 31, Censor.NET reports.

"We welcome today's vote by Ukraine's parliament on draft constitutional amendments on decentralization. This is an important step towards good governance for all Ukrainians which also helps fulfill another key piece of the Minsk agreements," Toner said.

"We deplore the violence outside the parliament today that reportedly resulted in the death of at least one police officer as well as dozens of injuries," U.S. Department of State Deputy Spokesperson also stressed.

"Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those killed and injured," he added.

"We call on all Ukrainians, no matter their affiliation or organization, to respect law and order," Mark Toner stated.

In addition he said that the United States fully respected Ukrainians' right to engage in peaceful protests but he also expressed belief that grievances must be addressed peacefully and lawfully in a democratic society.

The U.S. called for a full investigation into the cause of violence outside the Verkhovna Rada: " Those responsible should be held accountable," Mark Toner concluded.
