Military conflict in Donbas provoked and orchestrated by the Kremlin, Atlantic Council reports

Evidence presented in the report by the U.S. Atlantic Council provides a well-grounded and publically accessible database which demonstrates Russian involvement in the Ukrainian war.

This was announced by the former ambassador of USA in Ukraine, the head of the Eurasia Center John Herbst, Censor.NET reports citing Interfax-Ukraine.

There was a body of evidence showing that the war in the Donbas had been provoked and orchestrated by the Kremlin, Herbst declared during presentation of the "Hiding in Plain Sight: Putin's War in Ukraine" report by the Atlantic Council in Kyiv.

He told that the report contained evidence from open sources. In the course of its preparation, a digital forensics approach was applied to analyze footage and photos of Russian soldiers, convoys and military equipment, which were posted on the Internet either by these same soldiers or civilian-mercenaries of Russian origin.

The digital forensics approach includes methods allowing determining exact location where footage was made, which is a powerful tool for tracking people, the former ambassador explained.

According to him, these data show indisputably that the Russian side supplies weapons into the zone of the conflict, finances the war, and that there are Russian mercenaries and regular army soldiers in the Donbas region. The Russian General Staff is directly involved in this war, he said.

The Russian propaganda represents the crisis in Ukraine as a civil war. In reality the conflict in the Eastern Ukraine is a war created artificially by the Kremlin. It is carried out with arms produced in Russia by soldiers coming from Russia and with support of Russian government, Herbst said.

The former ambassador believes this report has to be spead not only in Ukraine, especially in the Donbas, but also in Russia and abroad.

Previously, the report has been presented in the European Parliament and in many European cities. In her turn, the vice-chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Oksana Syroid expressed gratitude to the authors of the report for "calling things their names" and "calling Russia a real culprit of the war and those who fight in it against Ukraine - the separatists."
