Peaceful settlement of the situation in Donbas is stuck due to unwillingness of Kyiv to negotiate with terrorists, Putin says

The process of peaceful settlement of the situation in the east of Ukraine is experiencing difficulties through the unwillingness of the Ukrainian authorities to negotiate with the representatives of illegal armed groups.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said, Censor.NET informs citing Interfax-Ukraine.

"I actually believe that the settlement process is stuck to a certain extent due to the fact that our partners in Kyiv have no desire to negotiate directly with the Donbas - with Luhansk and Donetsk," he said at press availability in Ufa on Friday.

According to the president, it looked somewhat strange, as "the partners from Kyiv insisted that the leaders of the Donetsk and Luhansk breakaway regions appeared in Minsk, that they personally signed these documents."

"Now we see that they do not want to be negotiated with, but why then they were asked to come and sign the documents? It's really strange," Putin said.

"Let's rely on the fact that it is just a tactical move. I'm more inclined to believe that we have a better chance to succeed than to fail," Russia's president said.

He stressed that "there is no other solution to Ukraine's problem except for opportunities to resolve it peacefully through a full and unconditional implementation of the agreements reached in Minsk."
