Poroshenko believes Russia will transit gas through Ukraine even after 2019

The president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko is sure about the Russian gas transit through the territory of Ukraine after 2019 admitting its purchase for European consumers on the Ukrainian-Russian border.

On Tuesday in Kyiv at a joint meeting with the President of Bulgaria Rosen Plevneliev Poroshenko said he was sure the gas transit through Ukraine and the transit agreement between Naftohas and Gazprom would be extended after 2019, as neither economic nor other reasonable alternative would exist, Censor.NET reports citing Interfax Ukraine,

He stressed the importance of ensuring the energy security of the European Union. "I can assure you that any projects bypassing Ukraine make gas more expensive for Europeans and result in noncompetitive prices. We'll never go for it. Ukraine is interested in ensuring a long-term energy security of the EU, based on market prices and principles. However, if this won't happen, and we'll come to agreement with the European Union, we'll buy gas for Europe on the Ukrainian-Russian border and it will deprive anyone of monopoly," the president of Ukraine said.

Poroshenko went on to note the prospects of using gas storage facilities in Bulgaria and Ukraine for gas supplies to Europe.

"We must do everything to stop gas from being a political weapon. This year we have done everything possible to go back to market prices and principles. On the basis of common commercial terms Ukraine and Bulgaria will negotiate the use of underground storage facilities on their territories to make our energy cooperation more efficient," Poroshenko said.
